Chelsea survived a second-half fightback from Arsenal to record only their second league win at Stamford Bridge under Rafa Benitez.
Juan Mata's sixth-minute strike and Frank Lampard's penalty gave the home side a 2-0 half-time lead but Theo Walcott's goal in the second half gave Arsenal hope.
Chelsea held on to move five points ahead of Tottenham and cut the gap to second-placed Manchester City to six points.
